Believed to be founded by Charlemagne in the early 800's, Andorra was part of France or Spain until it was given to the Catholic Church as a fief in 1176. The Principality of Andorra came into existence in the 1200's when a co-sovereignty was established between the Counts and the Bishops. In the 1400's when Henry of Navarre became King of France, Andorra became part of France. In 1793, Andorra again became semi-independent, but that was short lived as Napoleon established French rights over the area in 1806. When Napoleon was defeated by other European powers, Andorra again became a semi-independent Principality with-in France. In the 1800's, men gained the right to vote, but it wasn't until 1993 that Andorra accepted a written constitution, which made the Principality fully independent from France and gave the country democratic institutions. |
