Originally
mentioned by the Greeks, the area that is Qatar today came under the
rule of an Islamic sultan in the middle of the 7th century. The area
became economically prosperous under the Abbasid State in
the 8th century. In the 10th century the area came under the control of
the Turks and remained so until the end of World War I, when it came
under the protective umbrella of the British Empire. The Al Thani
family has ruled as kings under the Ottomans and the British since
1878. Qatar gained its independence in 1971 and since then has
prospered as an oil rich state.
